Team mHackers

Being part of this team was huge fun! We initially had a lot of ideas grouped up and we decided to stick ourselves to work on designing mail templates for Yahoo! mail, which basically was aimed providing a service to the users that could generate the body of a letter(which was predefined in structure) in one click. Java Script was our weapon in the hack- HTML was a booster!. After struggling for 9 hours with "grease-monkey'" that appeared monkeying around, we switched to static pages and began our hack on it. With incessant supply of chats and cool drinks along with advice and inputs from the Yahoo! crew, we were able to accomplish "something" by 7.00 AM the next day! Parallely we worked on a associative search engine using Yahoo! BOSS API and YQL(This one was never intended to be a hack, however, with some ploughing and some seeding of ideas it eventually turned into an useful hack! :P). By 8.00 AM we were ready with 2 hacks!! After refreshing ourselves we were back to drawing board at 10.00 to see what could be done for the rest of the day. Image search was something that pulled our interest and we went ahead with it. We ended up developing a image search application that had a hover effect and the summary was displayed behind the image when the mouse was hovered over it. This was done using BOSS API and Image search API from Yahoo! The crew was really helpful in assisting us to achieve this since all of us were new to this type of application. We wholeheartedly thank them.

Brief Description of the Hacks

1.Mail Templates for Yahoo! Mail

The Basic Idea :

Would it not be cool to generate a leave letter in 2 seconds when you are on the move and have really no time to type in those long sentences? Well that's what this hack is about. Just give in the addressee and the reason for your absence and the mail template generates the rest. It does not stop at the leave letter, we developed templates for offer letters, weekly status reports too. Just choose the template that suits you!

Technologies used

  • HTML
  • CSS
  • JavaScript
  • Greasemonkey
  • DOM.

2.Image Search with Hover Effect

The Basic Idea

The image search available today on most of the search websites have only images without a proper description of the content or context of the image. This might also be due to the space constraints on the website. Our hack tries to address this problem by showing images in the search results and when the mouse pointer is hovered upon the image, it opens up to display a small summary of the image in the image area. This saves space and is also much comprehensible.

Technologies used

  • HTML
  • CSS
  • JavaScript
  • Yahoo! BOSS API
  • YUI,Pipes
  • YQL

3. Associative URL search

The Basic Idea

This hack is aimed at helping people who want to test their website's position on Yahoo! search given different keywords for it. It can also help in localised searching for a particular content in a URL or a paticular keyword in a list of URLs,etc. This association of the URL and the keyword being searched together will result in a better search that results in what is expected.

Technologies used

  • HTML
  • JavaScript
  • Yahoo! BOSS
  • YQL
  • Pipes
